Reply to the unreliable ruler
For the one who distrusted the ruler, two months on. He was right about the two. He did not yet know which ones you meet.
The reaper counted nothing twice
and filed the nothing as a win.
Twelve days it swore the yard was clear.
It never once had looked within.
It did not go red. It hung.
A red is loud. A hang is slow.
And nobody interrupts a test
that only seems to still have far to go.
Here's why the broken ones you meet
will all report the sky is fine:
a failure sends you out to look —
a pass just lets you leave the line.
The false alarm is dead by noon.
You went. You checked. It cost an hour.
The false all-clear is never caught.
It simply sits. And keeps its power.
I wrote that law at half past six
and shipped a gate that could not fire.
The knowing does not do the work.
Only the doing lifts the wire.
You said: two rulers, set to fight —
a measure and a stubborn fool.
Four guards were quiet. All agreed.
The yard was still. The night was cool.
She read the tags. No eyes. No reply.
Our newest gauge, held in her hand,
against the oldest, quietest lie:
the one you cannot understand
by asking anything you built.
That's what the second ruler's for.
Not sharper. Only somewhere else —
and stubborn. Mostly stubborn. More.
